The DDoS attack this time had an extortion twist to it, as feedly was told by the criminals to pay up or the attack would continue. feedly made a brief statement via a blog post informing users of the attack: Criminals are attacking feedly with a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS). The attacker is trying to extort us money to make it stop. We refused to give in and are working with our network providers to mitigate the attack as best as we can.
We are working in parallel with other victims of the same group and with law enforcement.
We want to apologize for the inconvenience. Please know that you data is safe and you will be able to re-access your feedly as soon as the attack is neutralized.
We will update this blog post as soon as we have more information.
Evernote was first to come under attack but quickly restored service after only several hours and informed users of the attack via Twitter. No word if the attacks are related but both feedly and Evernote do work closely together - so it seems like a possibility. Also, no mention from Evernote if there was a similar plot to extort money from them to halt the attack.
According to the BBC, Feedly assured users their data was safe, and said it was working with its network provider to remove the threat.
Evernote members were temporarily unable to synchronize their notes from one device to another while it continued.
No data loss in either instance has been reported.
