Police in Orlando, FL, pulled over a car for having faulty tail-lights and were immediately alerted to the pungent odor of marijuana. The lone occupant of the vehicle, Akil Asim Horsford pulled a gun which he leveled at police and pulled the trigger, the weapon misfired and a scuffle ensued.
According to the police report obtained by the Orlando Sentinel, Horsford, 23, began arguing when officers ordered the felon out of the sedan parked near Pershing Pointe Apartments after they detected a strong smell of marijuana late Wednesday.
The traffic stop happened just before 11 p.m. and quickly turned into a fight with Horsford attacking Officer Brian Wood, police said.
Horsford "pushed off of Officer Wood's shoulder and took flight" with the officer close enough behind to zap the man with a Taser without it having any effect, a report said.
Upon catching and knocking Horsford to the ground, Wood found himself facing possible death.
"The defendant rolled to his back, pointed a black pistol at Officer Wood and pulled the trigger," the arrest report stated. "However, the handgun malfunctioned."
No cheap handgun prone to misfiring, the pistol turned out to be a P250 SIG Sauer that the National Rifle Association previously designated "tactical handgun of the year."
As the fight continued, Wood zapped Horsford a second time and tried to snatch away the gun as they wrestled on the ground.
Upon pinning Horsford, the officer tried to draw his own gun only to have Horsford bite a chunk out of his forearm and break free again.
Officer Bradley Miglio, Wood's partner, caught and knocked the man down. But Horsford wouldn't give up. Despite being hit repeatedly with a metal nightstick, Horsford tried to knock down both officers by kicking their legs and punching them.
A third discharge of the Taser briefly stunned him. But after the 5-second shock ended, Horsford continued fighting until more officers arrived and subdued him.
Police charged Horsford with attempted first-degree murder of a law-enforcement officer with a firearm, aggravated battery on a law-enforcement officer and aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer with a firearm.
