First 1,776 free ‘iPhone Liberation Kits’ gone in minutes; Still free for cost of shipping

iFixit offered 1,776 iPhone Liberation Kits for free and they were gone in minutes. Don’t fret however; as you can still get a free one if you pay shipping from July 1st to July 5th to celebrate Independence Day. In NY the cost to ship is $5.00, which seems reasonable. Limit is 2 per customer.

What is a Liberation Kit?

Newer iPhones use proprietary pentalobe screws that prevent customers from opening their devices. Take a quick look at the bottom of your iPhone—there's a good chance you have pentalobe screws, unless you got lucky with one of the early iPhone 4 units. And even though you purchased your phone, you do not have the ability to open it in order to repair it.

Apple likes it this way; iFixit does not.

Our iPhone Liberation Kit solves this problem by letting you replace the pentalobe screws with standard Phillips screws as seen in the photo below.
