An Orlando man decided to blow out the cobwebs of boredom and seize the day - you only live once, right? So get high and take a ride in a stolen Army vehicle! YOLO!!!!!
Jose Quinones, 19, jumped a 7 foot fence to gain access to the Army Reserve Training Center in Sanford; after locating one of the Humvee's that was not fully secured, he blasted through the barrier fence and out onto the roadway.
According to the Orlando-Sentinel, "Quinones was very confused, mumbled and could barely stand,'' Brandon Haught, a spokesman for the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, said in a report Thursday, hours after Quinones was arrested in Deltona. "A marijuana cigarette was found in the Humvee."
Details about how the intoxicated man started the Humvee remained a secret Thursday.
But it was clear it wasn't a smooth ride.
He drove it with the anti-theft device — a cable and locked padlock —fastened to the steering wheel.
Multiple calls from other drivers started to pour into 911 dispatch, reporting the military vehicle had no headlights, was blowing traffic signals and dragging debris as it sped along.
"There were sparks flying out from underneath it, and when he went across the light at Howland … the barrel flew out from behind him,'' a caller said. "And I was right behind him, and I had to swerve."
Quinones eventually pulled over; seemingly to give up the chase, but then attempted to restart the ride - police politely convinced him (with weapons drawn) to give up and took him into custody.
He was arrested and charged with grand theft, driving under the influence, driving an unregistered vehicle and marijuana possession. He is currently being held at the Volusia County Jail.
