Florida Friday: Two Lobster Poachers Meet Two Very Patient Cops

Miami residents Carlos M. Duran-Cantillo, 37, and Karel Cantillo-Martinez, 38, both face multiple counts after Florida Wildlife officers charged them with possession of eight lobster tails, 5 of which were undersized, because they were taken in a closed season.

Officers were in street clothes watching a snorkeler, later identified as Duran, come out of the water carrying a spear gun and a queen conch at Bahia Honda Channel. Officers identified themselves and ordered them not to discard anything at which point Duran tossed the conch back into the water.

Duran asked to get his cell phone, tossed it in the water, then jumped in himself. Duran taunted the officers to come after him. Officers convinced him they were not leaving and talked him into surrendering.

Somewhere during all of this, Cantillo had also disappeared. Night vision goggles were even used to try and find him. Once Cantillo thought the coast was clear he came out of the mangroves only to find that one of the officers made good on their promise to not leave and jumped out of the bushes, where he was hiding.

Duran was charged with possession of a queen conch and the eight lobster; failure to have a fishing license, measuring device or dive flag; and interfering with an FWC officer. Cantillo faces the same lobster and interference counts. He additionally was charged with violating probation from a prior felony case.

If you're a "Yankee" like me and never had Florida lobster, here's a tip; don't. There's lots of great fish to be had, but most Floridians will tell you their lobster is more of a crustacean.
