Craigslist is a great place to sell your stuff. However, criminals find it a great place to rip off people as well.
On Wednesday, a pregnant lady survived, but her unborn fetus did not, after being attacked when she went to buy some baby clothing advertised on Craigslist.
These kind of crimes has Florida officials concerned.
Trying to sell a gold necklace on Craiglist, Karl Trenker, who spent nearly 30 years in the Marines, was shot four times. The bullets hit him in the back, shoulder, abdomen and pelvis. He lived to tell about it.
Since 2009, at least 48 people have been killed in Craigslist related robberies.
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman believes safe havens are needed to protect Internet buyers and sellers.
"Go to a public place...that's likely to have cameras and security people," said Heyman. A police station is one option.
The Boca Raton Police Department has started advertising itself as a transaction site, and Police Chief Dan Alexander said he's already seen incidents drop.
"Just within the month of June we had four Craigslist related crimes," said Alexander. "We launched this campaign and since that time we haven't had any subsequent events."
The lawmakers in Florida are hoping to establish safe havens in every county in Florida. Jacksonville is next in line.
