Dariusz Prugar, 32, was convicted of computer hacking and wire fraud charges for trying to sabotage his former employer’s network.
The court handed down a sentence of 24 months with restitution totaling $26,000. He will begin his incarceration on Dec. 27th.
Prugar was the network administrator for ISP Pa Online until he was fired. In an act of revenge, Prugar hacked into the network and planted backdoors as well as malware that erased files and directories causing the network to crash. The crash caused 5,000 residential customers and 500 businesses to experience outages. Because of that act, many of the ISP's customers left for other ISP providers. Pa Online also incurred expenses related to getting their network back online.
Prugar was convicted in March of 2016 after a one week trial. Prugar was sentenced in Pennsylvania although he is a resident of Syracuse, N.Y.
