Coupon offers are leading to costly tech support scams.
The scam is for special offers, discounts and time-limited deals. It could be an offer of either Norton or McAfee. But when you redeem the coupon, the software downloads but it fails with an error message. You are then prompted to call a toll free number to finalize the install.
Guess where you go. That's right, you are sent to a boiler room in India where they take control of your system to "fix" the install. However, the bogus technician will identify severe problems that need an immediate fix.
What is it going to cost you? A mere $400 for their premium package that is guaranteed for a lifetime. Of course there is nothing there and there is no fix for the non-existent problems. Once they have your money, they could care less.
As always, if it seems to be too good to be true, it's probably a scam.
