Columbia County School District in Georgia was the latest in school breaches that affects staff members.
The breach compromised personal data, including Social Security numbers. One of its servers was breached and the district removed the server from service to contain the threat.
The school district has hired an outside security firm to help mitigate the breach. No student information was on the server, but it did hold personal information of employees. That information included names, Social Security numbers and birth dates of employees, spouses, dependents and insurance beneficiaries.
Affected individuals were counseled to put a fraud alert on their credit report. It is not known how many were affected and how the breach took place.
Schools and hospitals are easy targets for hackers. Few have the ability to afford IT staff to protect their resources.
