Juan Rodriguez was fired from the international hotel conglomerate Marriott back in August 2016.
Court documents show that he was warned to stay away from company computers. However, he was not deterred. A few weeks after being fired, he hacked into the reservations system and changed the price of rooms from $159 to $499 per night, down to $12 to $59.
The hacker made the simple mistake of not hiding his IP address while he hacked into the system. His home IP address matched the IP address used for his remote access.
He was arrested and charged with three felonies, including computer tampering and computer trespass. Marriott complained that the hack cost them $50,000 in lost revenue.
