Another ex-employee goes to jail for hacking his former employer.
Joe Vito Venzor, 41, from El Paso, has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for hacking and destroying the IT network of his former employer.
On September 1, 2016, Lucchese Bootmaker fired Venzor from his job as IT engineer at the company's help desk. The next day, Venzor perpetrated the hack.
Venzor did not go quietly. It took staff an hour to eject him from the premises. Court documents described Venzor as being "volatile."
Venzor accessed the servers by creating a backdoor account weeks before his firing. After gaining access to the server, Venzor proceeded to change the passwords for the companies IT employees and then deleted crucial system files.
His hacking affected the email, customer orders system, and systems in Lucchese's production line, warehouse, and distribution center. Production was halted and 300 employees were sent home.
Investigators discovered what happened and searched Venzors laptop. They found all Lucchese admin accounts, including passwords.
Venzor pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months in jail and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $57,397.76 for the damages he caused the company.
