GoDaddy says outage was not caused by a hacker attack - Update

Posted on: 09/12/2012 05:47 PM [ Comments ]

The service disruption that took thousands of web sites hosted on GoDaddy offline was not due to a denial-of-service (DoS) attack or a hack as originally thought. In a statement, GoDaddy confirmed that internal technical difficulties were to blame for the outage and apologized for the incident.

GoDaddy CEO Scott Wagner said that the company had "determined the service outage was due to a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables." It took six hours for the company to completely restore service across its network.

GoDaddy, which claims to be the world's largest domain name registrar, says it administers more than 53 million domain names for its clients. Initially, speculation that the outage was caused by a hacker attack had been fuelled by a Twitter user claiming to have attacked GoDaddy in the name of the hacker collective Anonymous. This was later denied by several other sources believed to be associated with the group.
