Google Play is rife with fake Mods for the popular Minecraft game.
Eset says that game players are being exposed to 87 apps that have been downloaded 990,000 times. Anyone who downloaded these fakes are going to be bombarded with aggressive ads and scam activity.
“Since [this] is able to download any sort of additional malware to the victim’s device, there is no reason to believe malware authors would stop at only displaying unwanted ads,” researchers noted. “Seeing they can lure thousands of users into installing their deceptive applications, more dangerous threats distributed under similar disguise might be the next logical step.”
Eset believes that mobile security apps should alert the users to the fake content.
To remove the fake apps, Eset explains that the victim has to first deactivate device administrator rights for both the app and the downloaded module (found under Settings -> Security -> Device administrators). Then it is a simple matter to uninstall the apps by going to Settings -> Application Manager.
