Tired of not trusting the apps in the Google web store? Well, Google is trying to better protect the users of its Chrome Web Store from malicious browser apps and extensions. All apps, as is the case in the Google Play Android apps store, will automatically be scanned for malware.
Developers who want to upload to the store will be informed that there will be a slight delay. Scanning is expected to take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour before the app is published. During the scan, the developer can cancel the upload process and withdraw their app.
Browser extensions – with the potential to monitor surfing behavior, steal cookies and manipulate web pages – should also be considered a serious security risk. The Facebook trojan JS/Febipos.A, for example, took over Facebook accounts in Brazil, spreading video advertisements and links in the names of the victims. In 2011, the Super Mario World 1 and 2 games offered in the Web Store required access to all data from any sites a user visited.
