Numerous websites are reporting that Gwar frontman Dave Brockie is dead at 50. Roommates reportedly found Brockie's body at his home Sunday evening (March 23). "I wish it was a joke," former GWAR bassist Chris Bopst, a music writer for Style Weekly, tells the site. "Everyone is in shock."
Gwar is a satirical thrash metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia in 1984. The band is well known for its elaborate science fiction/horror film inspired costumes, obscene lyrics and graphic stage performances, which feature humorous enactments of politically and morally taboo themes.
Think of it as Kiss meets Alice Cooper but leave the little ones at home. Albums are written to support the live stage show.
To say I am a huge fan is an understatement. I have been a fan for 30 years and seen the band numerous times live with my wife, friends and stepson. One of my all time favorites. Good thrash meets an entertaining stage show.
This will be the second death of a GWAR band member within the last three years. Former guitarist Cory Smoot, who played the character of Flattus Maximus for over ten years, was discovered dead on the band's tour bus on November 3, 2011. He was 34 years old.
I have watched the band for so many years and had so many good times, laughs and surprises. Every concert I go to from here out I will always think to myself “good show, but it wasn’t Gwar”.
R.I.P Dave.
Style Weekly, who first broke the story, has confirmed Dave is gone.
Some of my favorite Gwar songs:
I listen to this almost every time I am out on my motorcycle:
