Back in the day most Windows users would use Outlook Express or maybe Outlook of they had Microsoft Office installed. But those days are gone, and while many now use web based email, most people can use a good, free email client to manage multiple email accounts. We want lots of options, security and IMHO being portable is a huge plus. Let’s take a look at some of your options:
Mozilla Thunderbird might be a familiar name, especially if you use FireFox. It’s been around for a while and is my default email client. You can get extensions, there’s a ton of option and most important to me, is the portable version. This means you set it up in any folder and just copy that folder and run it anywhere so you always have all your email accounts, settings and archived mail. There’s no 64-bit version but then again I think the whole 64-bit thing is a bit overrated for small apps.

FossaMail is a newer email program based off of Mozilla Thunderbird above. It comes from the same people who brought you Pale Moon, the 64-bit version of FireFox. It looks and works a lot like Thunderbird and does not interfere with Thunderbird so you can test it out and remove it if you don’t like it. I don’t see a portable version currently but you can always back up the \appdata\FossaMail folder.

Foxmail is a lesser known program but if you want an email programs that looks a lot like your old Outlook Express (honestly, I loved Outlook Express but don’t tell anybody). It has some nice features like a remote mail viewer, a ticker, filters, multiple emails and more.

Sylpheed is another email program with an Outlook interface. It has a 3 pane display and supports most email accounts. It also has a search engine, filtering, junk mail settings.

Pegasus Mail is another fully featured, free email program. It seems to have it all - encryption, plugins, address books, multilingual, identities, security, glossaries and so much more.

Windows Live Mail is another way to go and might make some feel better by using the latest from Microsoft and the compatibility that goes along with that. It’s actually a really nice program with multiple email accounts (including Yahoo, Google and Microsoft Mail), photo sharing, calendar and more. The download is actually just the entire Windows Live tools (not a fan) but you can opt out and only install the Live Mail program.
