Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (BCBSNJ) is contacting members that on or about July 30th their system was hacked and members info was stolen.
The company says that false claims were submitted for 58 members. Several individuals fraudulently posed as doctors or other health care professionals, gained access to the personal information, and used the personal information to submit false claims to Horizon BCBSNJ.
What was stolen was names, dates of birth, genders and member ID numbers. No other info was stolen such as social security numbers.
The company has notified the FBI and the United States Attorney's Office and an investigation is under way. As is normal in these kinds of hacks, members are being offered free credit monitoring for two years.
The perpetrators posed as doctors or other health care providers and submitted false claims using member ID numbers in order to be reimbursed for medical services that were never provided.
If you believe you are affected but have not received a letter by October 5, 2015, please call 1-855-447-4755, Monday through Thursday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Eastern Time (ET) and Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., ET.
