How to Boost Your Wifi Signal Using a Beer Can?

Over the years we have heard of some strange tricks that somehow involve your kitchen and your computer. Certainly you are familiar with the old trick of putting a failing hard drive in the freezer, for example?

According to this video you can simply cut open a beer or soda can and use it on your router to extend your signal. We have not tested it but reading the comments some people said it worked and there is one issue – Many new routers lack an external antenna and there is no answer for this problem from the author but we do have a couple ideas.

There are many simple ways to improve performance. Some simple tips include proper placement, firmware, wireless channel and software tweaks. Read our guide on How to Improve Your Wireless Network Performance here. This covers just about everything you might need before you go adding a beer can or additional hardware.

But, to address the no antenna issue, you need to understand why there is no antenna. The antennas on these devices use MIMO (multiple in, multiple out). This means exactly what it says. A bunch of small antennas soldered on the board that send the signal in different directions. This is why placing your router closest to the center of the house is best. It might be worth a shot in the dark to use a metal can peeled apart behind the router and facing the direction you want the best signal. I am assuming that this might redirect some of the wasted signal in the right direction since metal tends to weaken, or even stop most wireless signals. I can't seem to get a signal in my furthest bathroom so I might have to try this ;)

Good luck!
