What I found first is that I need to pay attention a little more to the notifications that I receive, because Google announced the change back in October 2012.
The feature went live to all Gmail accounts yesterday, and can be easily switched off by: Going into your account, and hitting the 'compose' button, this will bring up a new message window.

Then you hit the down arrow in the right hand lower corner of the new message. This will bring up another window and from there you can temporarily disable the function, bringing you back to the familiar old view.
Note that this is only a temporary fix, and eventually it will be the norm on all Gmail accounts.
