By the end of 2014, Hewlett-Packard will lay off as many as 16,000 employees. This comes in addition to the 34,000 the company had already announced it would be letting go as part of a multi-year restructuring plan.
CEO Meg Whitman said: "No company likes to decrease the work force, and we recognize that this is difficult for employees. I think everyone understands the turnaround we're in."
The announcement of still more job cuts this week means that between 45,000 and 50,000 people out of the nearly 350,000 HP employed in 2011 will be gone by the end of this year.
Whitman said in a statement: "With the first half of our fiscal year completed, I'm pleased to report that HP's turnaround remains on track. With each passing quarter, HP is improving its systems, structures, and core go-to-market capabilities. We're gradually shaping HP into a more nimble, lower-cost, more customer- and partner-centric company that can successfully compete across a rapidly changing IT landscape."
