Forums running older versions of vBulletin were hacked and 819,977 user accounts, including email addresses, hashed passwords, as well as 1681 unique IP addresses were stolen.
Accounts that were stolen included Gmail (219,000), Hotmail (121,000) and Yahoo (108,000). All totaled, the hacker accessed 126 forums.
Multiple security vulnerabilities that were reported to vBulletin were used in the hacks and it is just sheer negligence that forum administrators have not updated their software.
The hacker accessed a wide variety of forums that included boards dedicated to artists, games, torrent sites, politics and adult movies, to name a few.
The hack was conducted between January and February 2017.
