Meet Eric Schneiderman, the New York Attorney General who Bloomberg says has sent a letter to Apple, Samsung, Google, Microsoft and more asking them to combat theft of their devices in the state.
“I seek to understand why companies that can develop sophisticated handheld electronics, such as the products manufactured by Apple, cannot also create technology to render stolen devices inoperable and thereby eliminate the expanding black market on which they are sold,” Schneiderman said in the letter to Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook.
I seek to understand why it’s the device maker’s responsibility. This guy is typical, N.Y out of touch and a shining example (they never end) of why I moved out of New York State. As someone pointed out, Honda is the most stolen automobile in New York, so did Honda also get a letter? You have common sense, tracking devices and insurance for starters. Fingerprint readers are coming.
What is to stop you from setting down your device for 5 or 10 minutes only to have it picked up, wiped and shut down most likely to be shipped overseas for re-sale? It’s happened to be and I doubt there is a person reading this who hasn't lost their phone or device, even if only for 5 minutes. I did it yesterday, although it was in ym own house
We don't expect much to come from this, but then again this is from the state that wants to limit how much soda you can buy.
