iPad 5 may shed thickness by trimming LEDs

One of the complaints about the iPad 5 is the weight. Sure, it’s a big screen but we as consumers are a fussy bunch. Honestly, I don’t think I ever picked one up until a few months ago and was surprised at the weight. Apple always finds a way to make their devices slimmer and word is that they have plans to do the same with the iPad 5.

"It's likely that part of the thinner/lighter design will be reducing the size of the LED backlight, partly by making the display more efficient and partly by using more efficient LEDs," said Paul Semenza, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch, in an e-mail to CNET.

Of course, it’s another analyst (still looking for an analyst job, btw) and another rumor but sometimes they pan out and this one makes sense although we also expect to other changes appear to reduce the overall weight.

We still expect to see it about October, in plenty of time for me to place it under the Christmas tree although I won't be surprised when I open it for myself.
