IRS Revises Breach to 300,000 Victims

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 08/19/2015 09:19 AM [ comments Comments ]

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has revised its estimate about how many taxpayer accounts may have been accessed in the May breach.

Originally they though it was confined to about 170,000. They are now saying that an additional 220,000 may have been affected.

In a statement, the IRS said: "The IRS has identified more questionable attempts to obtain transcripts using sensitive information already in the hands of criminals."

The agency is currently mailing letters to the 220,000 taxpayers that they feel might have been accessed by the hackers using the 'Get Transcript' taxpayer account information.

The IRS is saying that data "could be at risk even though identity thieves failed in efforts to access the IRS system."
