The U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff's unclassified email system was hacked on July 25th.
The system was brought back online Monday after the DOD confirmed that the system was swept of malicious content.
The DOD confirmed that the system was hacked by a phishing campaign and that about 4,000 employees were now able to access their email accounts.
Initial reports blamed the attack on a Russian hacking group called APT29.
The department's cyber security team first isolated the system and then cleared it of malicious software. The team also put new measures in place to harden the email system from future attacks.
