The FBI made good on its promise to charge the perpetrators of the JPMorgan data breach.
Officials in Israel and Florida arrested four men on Tuesday with a fifth remaining at large. Those charged were Gery Shalon, Ziv Orenstein and Joshua Aaron who allegedly orchestrated the scam. Anthony Murgio and Yuri Lebedev were arrested in Florida on Tuesday.
It is thought that these cybercriminals executed the JPMorgan hack, which fueled the cycle of spam and stock inflation. It is claimed that the men used stolen JPMorgan data, including emails and customer names, to promote stocks via a spam campaign.
In manipulating the price of the stocks through phony email advice, the group was able to inflate the price of the stocks from $0.017 per share to $0.033 netting the hackers more than $300,000.
Shalon and Orenstein, both Israeli citizens, were arrested while Aaron, an American residing in Israel, remains free.
