Former security officer Yovan Garcia has been presented with a bill for US$300,000 by a California district court for hacking his former employer's computer systems.
The company, Tyan Inc. became aware in 2014 that there was a problem with Garcia’s alleged overtime report and his rostered hours. The company found that he had somehow obtained credentials to their FileMaker Pro-based payroll system to log additional hours.
The company fired Garcia. However, they were hacked in October 2014 and the target of the hack was the company’s president. His emails, server files, accounting software and databases, and the FileMaker Pro databases were compromised.
The company's website was also attacked and defaced and Garcia also stole files in order to solicit the company's customers.
In a judge-only trial, Garcia was ordered to pay restitution of $318,661.70, which doesn't include legal fees.
