Equifax Inc, which is in the business of providing consumer credit information, has announced that criminals hacked their system between May and July. Total records stolen are estimated at 143 million consumers.
The company revealed that the stolen information included names, social security numbers, and, in some cases, driver's license numbers. Credit card numbers of 209,000 U.S. citizens were stolen as well as personal information of certain UK and Canadian residents.
The breach was discovered on July 29th, at which time the company hired a cybersecurity firm to investigate the breach.
The breach could be one of the largest in the United States.
Micah Locken commented: “Makes no sense to me that the amount of data Equifax has on the American public would not necessitate only the best cyber security. There should be a law on this.”
