We've been using jv16 PowerTools since, well...since JV was actually 16. trust me, that was a while ago. His software has always been successful, rock solid, and cutting edge. In a move that may come as a surprise to some, jv16 has launched an Indeigogo campaign in an effort to go 100% open source with his software. The cost - $100,000. At 330,000 lines fo delphi code, that's less about 30 cents per line. Seems fair.
Initially I assumed the companies intent was to monetize the product in some other fashion rather than traditional shareware sales. However, the true intent is to release the code to the wild and let the world bring the software to a new level.
"Macecraft has put thousands of hours of work into the product. Basically, it is our pride and joy. We cannot just give it away for free. Usually when a company or a product is sold, the price is determined by the gross sales per year, multiplied with a factor of 2-4. If the same formula would be used here, we would be asking a lot more, since the product is generating more than $100,000 USD in sales per year.
The reason why we put the target price this low is because we really and honestly wish only the very best for the product and its user community and this is why we rather sell the product to the user community and get less money, than make more money by selling it to our competitors, for example."
Given the success of Jouni's products, I'd wager a fair amount that his competitors will be dropping a few bucks in the crowd funding kitty to get a look at the source. I know I'd like to see it - and I can't code in delphi.
If you have yet to try jv16 PowerTools, it's definitely worth the download. You can check out the Freeware Version Here or the Pro Version Here.
