Keeping your network secure

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 08/23/2014 10:27 AM [ comments Comments ]

How easy would it be to hack your home network? We all have devices that are part of our network other than computers, tablets or cellphones. We are talking peripherals, such as smart TVs, printers, game consoles, network storage devices, satellite receivers, and media players, just to name a few.

Those devices are a gateway into our system. Some may still have the default username and password.

The best strategy for keeping your network secure is to:

1) Keep the firmware on all devices updated.

2) Change the default username and password on all devices.

3) Encrypt the files on your network. If you don't feel confident with a full-blown encryption tool, just create password-protected ZIP files.

Use common sense and understand that everything can be hacked, even your hardware devices.
