MajorGeeks Support Forums Down for New Software (UPDATED)

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on 11/16/2015 06:43 AM [ comments Comments ]

Update: We're back and on a new server. It looks great and is working great so far. Join us @ http://forums.majorgeeks.com.

The Support Forums on MajorGeeks are down for new software. We expect it back online somewhere between 2 minutes and 2 days. We are attempting to import the database with all users and posts. With over 1.2 million posts and over 250,000 members, this might be time consuming. If you want more information, read on, otherwise just keep checking back.

Long story short, we have been using VBulletin software. As of version 4.x there have been all sorts of bugs, vulnerabilities and more. Because of this, we stayed with the old 3.x software for as long as we could as the lesser of two evils.

At some point we had to shut the forums down to free up the resources to move such a massive database move so we’ve put it off and for far too long.

Last night, however, someone was able to gain access to the forums, most likely using a known exploit, and move some folders around as well as leave behind a remote shell. They didn't cause any damage or steal any information that we're aware of so we're glad for that.

We are working on it now and at the mercy of the server speed. Once we have it working we will open the forums back and and work on setting up the theme over the next week.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.
