A man lost his hand during a freak accident in North Carolina; John Rufty is listed in critical condition at local hospital after his hand was severed by the propeller of a airplane while he was mowing a grassy strip runway at the privately owned airport.
The plane was attempting to land at Taylorsville Airport when the accident occurred.
According to the Hickory Daily Record, the plane, a 1971 Citabria 7ECA manufactured by Champion, touched down toward the west end of the field. As it approached the end of the strip, its right wing and wing struts struck Rufty as he mowed. The plane flipped end over end, coming to rest upside down with Rufty and the mower underneath the wing.
Emergency management coordinator, Russell Greene said, “this is a simple grass strip, small planes only, typically, pilots circle the field, make sure the field is clear, and then come in and land.”
The airport is not monitored by flight controllers.
