A Chicago man has pleaded guilty to hacking the Apple iCloud and Gmail accounts of over 300 people. Edward Majerczyk, a 28-year-old, hacked numerous people including celebrities from the entertainment industry, the Department of Justice, and the Central District of California.
He was accused of abusing the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Between November 2013 and August 2014 Majerczyk used a phishing scam to steal usernames and passwords.
He is facing 5 years in prison. He not only hacked their accounts but also hacked into his victims’ private lives, causing embarrassment and lasting harm, said Deirdre Fike, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.
Majerczyk was not the only one accused of hacking email accounts to steal personal information. Ryan Collins, a 36 year old from Pennsylvania, also pleaded guilty in March to sending fake emails in the name of Apple or Google to steal users’ personal information.
