Meta Builds an AI Diplomat with Human-Level Competency

Posted by: Corporal Punishment on 11/23/2022 06:38 AM [ comments Comments ]

Meta's Open Source AI system CICERO has now reached a level of human-like proficiency to be a competent diplomat.

CICERO was designed with both strategic reasoning and natural language to compete in an online game call Diplomacy

Cicero, over time, has doubled the average score of human players, placed 1st in an eight-game tournament, and now ranks in the top 10% of players who played more than one game.

Andrew Goff, Diplomacy World Champion, describes how impressed he has been with CICERO's empathy and ruthlessness. Which, as a diplomat, is a good thing, but as an AI computer -- well, somehow, those words seem to make me apprehensive. However, it is now hard not to envision a world where the interplay between humans and machines will be more common, intimate, and intuitive. Improving that aspect seems like a good step. We've come a long way from the WOPR.

CICERO is Open Source and available for download from Meta's GitHub Repository. If you want to learn how to play the game, here is a video from a Diplomacy expert DiploStrats playing against CICERO.
