Microsoft is extending support for the UK government to cover tens of thousands of PC's running XP.
Microsoft will release security patches to Windows XP users in the public sector until April 8, 2015.
The cost? £5.584m. Microsofts standard price for a three year support contract is $200. The UK is seeing a savings of approximately £20m against “standard” pricing.
Eligibility is dependent on having in place plans to migrate off Windows XP. Microsoft stated: “Agreements such as these do not remove the need to move off Windows XP as soon as possible.”
There are many organizations that will miss the deadline to migrate off XP, including: the Metropolitan Police and HM Revenue and Customs, with 85,268 and 38,551 PCs respectively running Windows XP.
