Microsoft embarrassed by SEA hack to twitter accounts

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 01/13/2014 05:16 PM [ comments Comments ]

Attackers claiming to belong to the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) hacked into both the @MSFTnews and @XboxSupport accounts on Saturday.

Messages left on the accounts read: “Don’t use Microsoft emails (Hotmail, outlook), They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments.”

A Microsoft spokesperson sent the following statement:

“Microsoft is aware of targeted cyber attacks that temporarily affected the Xbox Support and Microsoft News Twitter accounts. The accounts were quickly reset and we can confirm that no customer information was compromised.”

These breaches are a further embarrassment to Microsoft and seem to indicate that its internal security processes still aren't up to scratch.
