Microsoft is accused of sneaking in a little nagware in its latest Patch Tuesday downloads.
Woody Leonhard at InfoWorld discovered that for those running Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, this month's KB3139929 security fix issued as part of Patch Tuesday has an unexpected surprise inside - KB3146449 - under the rather vague explanation of "several non-security-related fixes for Internet Explorer".
The update will make Internet Explorer display a banner ad saying: 'Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10'.
What is worrying is that it is not separate to the security update. Users only choice is to either delete the security update or keep the banner ad.
Furthermore, KB3146449 doesn't appear in users' update history. The update only affects home users. Corporate licenses are not affected.
Some have called the free upgrade to Win 10 "unsettling and Orwellian".
