Update:
Microsoft, the parent company of Minecraft developer Mojang, has confirmed that Minecraft has not been hacked.
In all likelihood, the Minecraft credentials were stolen from fans of the blocky online building world through phishing attacks and keylogging malware.
A list of over 1,800 Minecraft usernames and passwords have been published on Pastebin.

Security expert Graham Cluley says the cause could have been the result of "simple phishing attacks, keylogging malware stealing players’ details as they log into the game, or even a security breach at Minecraft itself".
There is no mention of the Minecraft breach on their home page and that’s not a good thing.
No one yet knows how, why, or whether more are coming.
Players should change their passwords immediately.
