Mineoama and the $500K scamorama

Organizers of a Minecraft convention, $150 per ticket, disappeared with $540,000 in ticket sale proceeds, the organizers abruptly closed down social media and websites associated with event - but not before tweeting one last message - "PLEASE NOTE WE ARE NOT A SCAM." General rule of thumb; stating you are not a scam pretty much solidifies the fact that you are one.

According to Kotaku, on July 8, organizer Lou Gasco added on Twitter that the convention had been delayed because "financing fell through," and promised that he'd send out an update with specific instructions for refunds.2

But now, their web presence has disappeared. Their website is down, and earlier this month they deleted their Twitter account, which was quickly picked up by a squatter. (The current description reads: "BEST Minecraft con to NEVER happen coming to New York city 20-NEVER.") Their Facebook account still exists but hasn't been updated since July 8, though other people are still posting on their wall, asking about refunds.

A reporter with Kotaku contacted one of the organizers and asked if he could answer some questions about the convention he helped organize.

"No comment," he said, and hung up, and then probably dove into the sea of ill-begotten cash strewn upon his 4000 thread count bed sheets. I really hate Scammers.
