Mr. Robot Imitators Spreading Malware

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 01/05/2017 12:33 PM [ comments Comments ]

Cyber-criminals are trying to take a page out of the TV show Mr. Robot.

The criminals have launched a campaign full of threats using the show's “FSociety” brand. According to Bleeping Computer, the attack uses a DDoS attack along with a DDoS booster service named "fs0ciety" which comes with a Skeeyah malware downloader, a screen lockers, a rebooter described as a screen locker wannabe, and crypto-ransomware variants.

Mr. Robot shows hackers using complex attacks which involve social engineering, software exploits, hardware hacks and malware. However, the real life hackers are showing some incompetency. A Portuguese-speaking malware author is behind the screen locker, but it is simply removed by typing in the word “Senha” which is Portuguese for “password.”

This type of imitation has started to evolve only after the second season of the popular TV show. It is possible that more will also try to imitate the fictitious tale.
