Ross Ulbricht, the alleged kingpin of Silk Road, has had his defense team suggest that Mt.Gox creator Mark Karpeles was the actual kingpin of Silk Road, better known as Dread Pirate Roberts.
In a surreal twist on Thursday, US Department of Homeland Security special agent Jared Deryeghiayan confirmed to a court in New York that Karpeles was investigated in 2012 as a possible administrator of Silk Road.
"I have a wealth of evidence to prove that [Karpeles] is Dread Pirate Roberts," the special agent wrote in an affidavit, dated 2013, which was read out to the jury.
Deryeghiayan was being cross-examined by Joshua Dratel, a defense lawyer for Ulbricht.
Ulbricht is being accused with four narcotics charges, and one charge each of computer hacking, trafficking in fraudulent documents, and money laundering conspiracy. He is additionally charged with attempting to arrange the murders of as many as six people. He will face those charges in Maryland after his trial in New York ends.
Although Ulbricht admits he created the web site, he denies he is Dread Pirate Roberts and says he is being framed. He has been held without bail since Oct. 2013.
