New email scam targets Armed Forces Personnel

Contributed by: Email on 06/14/2012 01:29 PM [ comments Comments ]

A new email scam is making the rounds and targeting mainly active and retired Armed Forces Personnel. The email is supposedly from the IRS, which we all know does not use emails to contact citizens. However, this scam suggests that there might be additional funds available to the user if they would supply additional information.

The message goes on to encourage the user to supply their last years tax info. They are looking for personal info, such as Social Security numbers and dates of birth. If the user is convinced to supply that info, it will be used to commit identity theft.

Anyone who receives such an email is encouraged to contact their local authorities and report the scam.

The IRS does not hold email addresses and will only contact citizens by US postal service.
