Malwarebytes Senior Security Researcher Jerome Segura has issued a warning about a new form of tech scam that delivers malware related to ransomware.
The malware is delivered by a fake Flash or software update. Once downloaded, it waits for a reboot and then gives the update screen that most users are familiar with. However, it then turns into a screen that warns the user that either the product key is out of date or the license needs to be renewed. It nicely provides a 1-800 number for help.
If the user calls the number, the "fix" will cost them not only $250, but their peace of mind as the scammers now have their credit card info.
Segura said: "It's fairly new, but just in the past week I've seen many cases on forums and via our own support channels. I think this is going to be a major change and is likely to get very common."
A security researcher by the name of @TheWack0lian has provided a key combination to combat the malware. Holding the Ctrl+Shift and pressing the S key will unlock the screen.
