Abiodun Adejohn, a Nigerian man, was sentenced today to three years in prison for his role in a phishing scheme that targeted U.S. government employees and defrauded vendors of nearly $1 million.
Adejohn has pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy. A New Jersey federal court accepted the plea.
The case highlights the effectiveness of phishing scam. Adejohn used fraudulent emails and websites mimicking U.S. government agencies to lure employees to "log in." Using the stolen credentials, Adejohn would then place purchase orders for goods for office supplies to government-authorized vendors.
He would then resell the merchandise in Nigeria. Along with the three year sentence, he was also ordered to pay $630,306.48 in restitution.
