Another scam has surfaced where hackers are trying to get people to hand over their credentials on their Facebook accounts. The attackers have breached the open source text editor Notepad ++, trying to trick users to input their Facebook info. Software downloads of the popular software were not affected and the rest of the web site seems to have been fixed.
At the end of last week, the web site was defaced by the hackers and would pop up a window asking for a Facebook login. The hackers appeared to be using the official Facebook API in an attempt to gain access to account info from the visitors to the site.
Anyone who entered their Facebook credentials could potentially have given the hackers access to all the functions on their account, such as personal info and the ability to post status messages. Users would have to visit their Facebook account and log into the account settings to revoke these permissions. It was not enough to simply change the account password. The site MyPermissions.org provides direct links to all relevant permission pages for services such as Facebook.
