Vladimir Anikeyev, who headed the hacking group Shaltai Boltai ("Humpty Dumpty"), has been sentenced to two years by a Russian judge for breaking into the accounts of high-ranking Russian officials.
He is believed to be behind the high-profile attacks, which included the Twitter account of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. He was found guilty of gaining unauthorized access to computer data during a closed "secret" trial.
Other high-ranking officials included lead Kremlin propagandist Dmitry Kiselyov, presidential advisor Andrei Belousov and Medvedev's spokeswoman Natalia Timakova. The group also claimed responsibility for breaking into the Twitter account of premier Medvedev and posting messages saying he was quitting his office in shame.
The group was thought to have breached accounts to embarrass officials, but, in a statement, they confessed that their only motive was to sell the data to the highest bidder.
Although no link has been established, the arrest comes on the heels of the arrests of several high-ranking cybercrime officials at Russia's FSB security agency.
