A man was bloodied by NYPD officers after he was stopped for jaywalking at Broadway and 96th streets in the Upper West Side. The police ordered Kang Wong, 84, to the side of the road after seeing him walk against the lights along with countless other New Yorkers; there was apparently a language barrier and Wong didn't understand police commands.
There is an increased NYPD presence in the area of 96th street due to several fatal vehicle vs pedestrian accidents that have occurred there recently.
Witnesses say that it was apparent that Wong did not understand what police were saying to him.
According to the NY Post, one witness, Ian King, a Fordham University law student said “The guy didn't seem to speak English. The cop walked him over to the Citibank” near the northeast corner of 96th and Broadway.
Once there, Wong attempted to simply walk away, it is reported that he only lives about a block away from that intersection. But "The cop tried to pull him back, and that's when he began to struggle with the cop," said King, 24. "As soon as he pushed the cop, it was like cops started running in from everywhere."
Wong was left bleeding and dazed with cuts to his face.
NYPD officials said "the incident is under internal review."
The violence unfolded in front of several news reporters, who had been at the intersection documenting an accident that killed Upper West Side pedestrian Samantha Lee 12 hours earlier.
