Researchers discovered that electric skateboards are hackable. What will they think of next?
Richo Healey, who works on security for payments company Stripe, was riding on his skateboard when he reached a busy intersection and his skateboard stopped responding to commands.
As it turns out, the high volume of Bluetooth traffic surrounding the intersection interfered with his remote’s connection to his board.
He teamed up with Mike Ryan, who works on security for eBay, and together they developed a "a synthetic version of the same [radio frequency] noise” that stopped Healey at the intersection.
The hack allows the hacker to completely take over the board to the point of stopping it or putting it in reverse at high speed. Either hack puts the rider at risk of being injured.
The team will be presenting their findings at the DefCon hacking conference annual meeting in Las Vegas this weekend.
