We reported on a new ransomware variant called Fantom which acts like a Windows update to fool people into downloading it.
Now there is a new form that is targeting Linux users. FairWare demands a hefty two bitcoin payment and even then there is no guarantee the files will be released.
Fantom even includes a count-down timer to further assure the victim that it is indeed an update. It does not include a ransom note, but instead provides an email address for the victim to contact the hacker.
FairWare threatens to leak the system data unless the ransom of 2 bitcoin isn't paid. βAt this time it is unknown of the attacker actually retains the victim's files and will return them after ransom payment. Though all ransomware victims should avoid paying a ransom, if you do plan on paying, it is suggested you verify they have your files first,β Abrams wrote in a separate blog post.
Although it is not known how the ransomware is spread, one victim says it appears to have been done with a brute force attack.
