The NYC Port Authority ran the lighting system of One World Trade Center through a nighttime test that could be seen from over 50 miles away; the spire contains 288 50-watt LED modules that produce 288,000 lumens of light. There has been some debate whether or not the building is the tallest in the western hemisphere, competing for that distinction with the Willis Tower in Chicago.
The test, according to NY1, comes as a meeting is held to decide whether the structure is officially a spire.
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat accepts "spires" when it comes to measuring building heights.
With the spire, One World Trade is 1,776 feet tall, making it the tallest in the Western Hemisphere.
"It arouses many emotions and those lights will only draw more attention to it and I think rightly so,” said a New Yorker.
Without the spire, One World Trade is only 1,368 feet tall, meaning it's shorter than the Willis Tower in Chicago.
The Council is based in the Windy City, but a spokesperson said their home base will not sway their ruling, which is expected next week.
Either way - it is a beautiful sentinel of freedom and perseverance that will be sure to never allow us to forget.
